Cooking with a Lid
By the Maurvia team · October 16, 2026 · 1 min read · Energy
It's probably the simplest cooking trick there is: put on the lid. And yet, many times we boil water or cook stews with the pot uncovered purely out of habit.
What the Lid Does
With the pot covered, heat and steam stay inside. Water reaches a boil faster, and once it's boiling, it's easier to maintain it with less power.
How to Make the Most of It
- Use a lid that fits your pot well.
- Choose a pot that matches the size of the burner or cooking zone: if the base is much smaller, some heat is lost around the sides.
- Once the water is boiling, lower the heat: often, maintaining a gentle simmer is enough.
- Only use the amount of water needed for the recipe.
When to Uncover
Some recipes require reducing liquid or browning, and a lid doesn't help there. Always follow your recipe's instructions, the type of cooktop you have, and the manufacturer's recommendations. Pay special attention to stews with milk, rice, or pasta, which can boil over with the lid on.
Small Gesture, Daily Habit
Lidding becomes automatic in just a few days. It's one of those small habits you can track along with your household expenses in Maurvia, to see your complete routine at a glance.
