Defrost in the Refrigerator
By the Maurvia team · October 11, 2026 · 1 min read · Food
Defrosting seems simple, but doing it correctly is important for food safety. The safest way doesn't require any tricks: just plan a little in advance.
Defrost in the Refrigerator
- The night before, move the food from the freezer to the refrigerator.
- Place it in a suitable, covered container, so it doesn't drip onto other foods.
- Put it on the bottom shelf, especially if it's meat or fish.
- Large items may need more time: keep this in mind when planning.
What to Avoid
Avoid leaving food on the counter for hours at room temperature. Even if the center is still frozen, the outside can spend too much time at an unsafe temperature.
Once Defrosted
- Cook it soon.
- Do not refreeze it raw.
- If you cook it, you can refreeze the cooked dish, following official food safety recommendations.
If You Forget
Some microwaves have a defrost function. If you use it, follow the manufacturer's manual and cook the food immediately afterward.
